About Us

The Southern Energy Network was formed after the first SSREC in 2004 to
continue the momentum year-round.

Mission

Our Mission at the Southern Energy Network is to build and facilitate an inclusive student- and youth-led movement in the Southeast that empowers communities, develops leaders, and promotes a clean, just, safe, and sustainable energy future.

Goals:

The Southern Energy Network current set of three year goals are to:

  • Establish and facilitate statewide networks in all 12 Southeastern states (KY, NC, SC, TN, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, AR, VA, WV) and assist in the organizing of state summits to enable, empower, and connect the student and youth community in the Southeast.

  • Facilitate the launch of sustainable energy campaigns on 25 campuses and achieve the adoption of comprehensive greenhouse gas reduction plans on 10 campuses.
  • Leverage campus victories to achieve greenhouse gas reduction plans and/or comprehensive clean energy policies in ten cities.

Values

While striving in its daily practices to meet the formidable challenges laid out before it, the Southern Energy Network vows to act under a set of values which emphasize a global perspective, holistic sustainability, inclusiveness, awareness-raising through education, community empowerment, youth leadership development, and which deems the interests of environmental and humanitarian justice priority over economic costs.

Vision

The Southern Energy Network envisions a future that is:

  • Powered by a clean, carbon-free, renewable, de-centralized, and affordable energy infrastructure.
  • Populated by people who are aware of the source of their energy, and recognize the social and environmental consequences of their energy use.
  • Made up of empowered communities and individuals who are committed to obtaining social and environmental justice.
