Take Action Against Coal!

After multiple coal disasters, the coal industry isn’t just sitting back and watching a future for coal disappear, they are digging in deep, including the launch of a “Blogger Brigade” to continue promoting the myth of clean coal.  So now, more than ever we have to step up our efforts to stop the development of any new coal plants and to invest in truly clean energy.  It’s time for us to take the conductors seat and drive the train towards a clean, safe, and healthy energy future.

Recruit experts to analyze water samples from TVA ash spill
Knoxville-based environmental justice organization United Mountain Defense seeks to build a network of scientists for the comprehensive analysis of contaminated water surrounding the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant spill of December 22, 2008.  Water samples gathered by United Mountain Defense field personnel will be organized according to sources including household faucets, open watercourses, well-water and groundwater, and Emory River estuaries.  EPA-monitored substances that may be present in the samples include arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, nickel, selenium, vanadium, zinc, benzoperylene, and napthalene.  Analysis of control substances for amounts of heavy metals in uncontaminated waters is also needed to establish comparison.  For more information about emissions at the Kingston Fossil Plant, including annual toxicity records, see TVA website or contact our offices.  United Mountain Defense also requests consultation regarding the scientific analysis of contaminated water and related public health risks, including state and federal standards.  Please contact our offices at 865-689-2778 with any questions, comments, or humorous anecdotes you may have.  Your effort and expertise in this difficult time are greatly appreciated by our personnel and all those affected by the events of December 22nd.?
