Carbon Free Nuclear Free South Carolina!

Current barriers to a Carbon Free Nuclear Free SC

Right now, South Carolina youth are joining together in a No Coal, No Nukes statewide team to work collectively to support grassroot efforts to keep all these new, dirty proposals from becoming realities. Jenkinsville, SC--South Carolina Electric & Gas and Santee Cooper currently operate one reactor at the Virgil C Summer Nuclear Facility in Jenkinsville but have recently applied to build two more reactors at the site.  The VC Summer reactor pulls water from the Monticello Resevoir (which gets its water from the Broad River) and casts a shadow over the surrounding community: providing few jobs and plenty of pain.  SCE&G recently got permission to begin pre-construction construction activities such as site clearing, excavation and rail line work.  The utility recently received permission to implement a 37% rate increase to pay for the new reactors from the SC Public Service Commission. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will soon begin drafting it's first attempt at an Environmental Impact Statement for the project, but written comments can still be submitted online at: http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main?main=DocketDetail&d... through April 6th, so add your voice today!

The Santee Cooper Pee Dee coal plant in South Carolina was canceled do to large public opposition but now electric co-ops in SC now plan to buy "excess" electricity from Duke Energy. The contract for 1000 MW is more than the output of the Cliffside coal plant, and Duke plans to build a new lake at its proposed nuclear reactor site in Cherokee County, South Carolina, just downstream from the Cliffside site, both on the Broad River. The two nukes would use 35 million gallons of river water in evaporative cooling. So South Carolina must align with their Northern Neighbors to help Stop the cliff side coal plant!! South Carolina is still down stream and there is plenty of offshore wind to satisfy the states energy demands, and further the economy!

If you haven't heard, most of South Carolina's Gubernatorial incumbents are Pro-Nuclear and the false promise of 'clean coal' as South Carolinas "Clean Energy Future". Youth and community are constantly engaging and working to de-bunk these false solutions as well as increase the level of support for a real green economy!
